Microsoft OneNote 101
Microsoft OneNote is an app that is designed for research, note-taking, and information storage. Similar to apps like Evernote and Dropbox Paper, it lets you store text and images in free-form documents which you can keep private or share with others. OneNote is a part of the Microsoft Office Suite, along with programs like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
What are the benefits of Microsoft OneNote?
As part of the Office 365 suite, it has a familiar interface and has now been integrated into many workplaces. Anything saved in OneNote is instantly shareable with other users.
OneNote at a glance
Organize - Sort content across notebooks, sections, and pages.
Tag - Highlight can’t-miss notes with Important and To-Do tags.
Ink - Draw your thoughts and annotate your notes, using a stylus or your finger.
Mix media - Record audio notes, insert online videos, and add files.
Clip and save - Use the OneNote Web Clipper to save content with a single click.
Share - Share notebooks with coworkers, friends, and family.
OneNote is divided into three key areas: Notebooks, Sections, and Pages.
OneNote follows a “paper” notebook approach for organizing and storing notes electronically. Just like with the regular, paper-based notebook, where you have different pages and sections, OneNote follows the same exact terminology and methodology. Within OneNote, you can create:
Pages
Pages would be your regular pages in a notebook. For example, you could create a page for each meeting, where agenda and meeting minutes would be stored.
Sections
Pages are then organized into sections. A section is how you would typically break down your paper notebook, right? So you can have a section for Meetings, a section for Project Issues, Business requirements, etc.
Notebooks
Pages and Sections make up a single Notebook. Of course, you can create many different notebooks. For example, you can create a Notebook for each project.
